Temptation - 13 Mar 11
Fr Steve Voyt
Always on the first Sunday in Lent we hear of the temptations of Jesus. How He went out to the desert, stripped of all the clutter of life and renewed His relationship with His Father. In the process, He recognized some of the blocks that would truly help Him recognize that presence. You hear how He struggled to move them aside. He sets the example for us, because many times, we have blocks that keep us from truly listening to God.

Ash Wednesday - 9 Mar 11

Fr Steve Voyt
Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent, is a time of preparation for the events of
Holy Week.
During the next 40 days, we need to
take a look at where we’re going and
what adjustments we need to make to truly make God our number one
priority. We should push aside
those things that get in our way of
seeing God as clearly as we want to.
How will the next 40 days going to be
different for you?

Pray with Gratitude - 6 Mar 11
Father Robert McTeigue, S.J.
As Lent comes towards us we start thinking of Lenten resolutions. The problem is that resolutions always weaken. What we need is a form of motivation and resolution that doesn’t fail and the best form of motivation is gratitude. There is always a reason to be grateful. We need to cultivate the habit of gratitude. Fr. McTeigue tells you how in this powerful homily.

Following the Rules in a Loving Way - 13 Feb 11
Monsignor Marv
LeFrois
In other scriptures, we see Jesus
live the “spirit” of the law and even criticize the “letter” of the law.
What Jesus says in today’s Gospel
is not just to follow the rules
because it is our duty, but follow
rules in a loving and compassionate way. It was a rule to make a
sacrifice at the altar in the days
of Jesus, just like it is a rule of our Church today to attend Mass on Sundays. This Gospel tells us that it is not enough to just follow that rule while we still harbor anger toward someone. For the sake of our own
well-being, we need first to go make peace with our opponent.

Constant Presence of God - 6 Feb 11
Fr Steve Voyt
Today in the Gospel, Jesus reminds us of the constant presence of God in our life. Many times we don’t see what is missing in our lives until the other support systems we’ve built suddenly disappear. Do you have that presence of God in your life?

Reaching Out to Others - 30 Jan 11
Fr Steve Voyt
Today in the Gospel, we are challenged to change our life in the way that God is asking us to do. God has a way of coming into our lives in ways that we never expected or planned for. Why? Because He’s the God of the infinite possibilities. The challenge for us is to be open to these different possibilities.
God has His schedule, which is not necessarily our schedule. As they say, “If you want to make God laugh then tell him your plans.” It doesn’t quite work out that way. The challenge is, “Are we open to God’s way, instead of our own.”
How open are we to radically changing our life in the way that God is challenging us to do?

Advent - Gaudete Sunday - 12 Dec 10
Fr Steve Voyt
Gaudete Sunday marks the halfway point through our Advent journey. So today’s question is “Is our preparation for Christmas halfway completed?” We’re not talking about things like, putting up the tree, decorating the house, sending out cards, or buying presents. We’re talking about our spiritual journey of preparing ourselves to receive Christ. How prepared are we spiritually to receive Christ?

Advent - A Time of Preparation - 5 Dec 10
Fr Steve Voyt
Today in the readings we hear a cry from the wilderness, a cry to make ready for the way of the Lord, to be prepared. That’s what Advent is all about, a time of preparation.
One of the questions we need to ask ourselves is how have we prepared ourselves? How are we different from a week ago? What activities have we started in our lives that help us to prepare for the coming of Christ - not just to get ready to celebrate Christmas - but to celebrate the coming of Christ.

Are You Ready for Tomorrow? - 14 Nov 10
Fr Steve Voyt
Today the readings focus on the future. As we come to the end of the liturgical year, the readings begin to look at that of which is to come. Some people look to the future with hope and others look at it with despair. It really depends on where you are in your faith and your relationship with God.
When we look at the days which are to come, do see hope or do we see despair? Do we see the presence of God that which should fill us with hope?

What is Heaven? - 7 Nov 10
Fr Steve Voyt
Today in the Gospel (Luke 20:27-38 or 20:27, 34-38) Jesus directs our attention to that ultimate place, that goal that all of us have, heaven, and begins to get us to think about what is Heaven going to be like. A lot of different images come to mind, but over and over again, Jesus redirects us to that idea that Heaven is that unified relationship with God our Father. So often though, on our way to Heaven, we put little barriers that keep us from truly recognizing that relationship. We call those sin.

Peer Pressure - The Outside Pressures to "Fit In" - 31 Oct 10
Fr Steve Voyt
Father Steve discusses what it means to “be a fool for Jesus” and the pressures all of us have to “fit in.”
Father challenges us. Can we persevere and stand up for our belief, that gives us purpose and direction in our lives, despite the outside pressures? Does the behavior we choose enrich our relationship with God our Father?

Barriers to Letting God into Our Lives - 24 Oct 10
Fr Steve Voyt
The Gospel today (Luke 18:9-14) asks us a simple question, “Why is it that we go to church?” In the Gospel it’s the Temple but for us its, "Why is it that we go to church? Why is it that we pray? What are we trying to do?" Hopefully the answer would be to renew and strengthen my relationship with God. But many times things get in the way of relationships.
One of the first and foremost things that get in the way is pride, where we sit back and say, “I’m really pretty good. I’m really pretty great. I really don’t need much of anybody’s help because I’m so good on my own.” We do that with people and sometimes we do it with God. But if we’re honest with ourselves, we need to admit how much we have that relationship with God. So, let us pause to reflect on those things that put up barriers from our truly recognizing the need to invite God into our lives.
