In other scriptures, we see Jesus
live the “spirit” of the law and even criticize the “letter” of the law.
What Jesus says in today’s Gospel
is not just to follow the rules
because it is our duty, but follow
rules in a loving and compassionate way. It was a rule to make a
sacrifice at the altar in the days
of Jesus, just like it is a rule of our Church today to attend Mass on Sundays. This Gospel tells us that it is not enough to just follow that rule while we still harbor anger toward someone. For the sake of our own
well-being, we need first to go make peace with our opponent.
