Parish News

New Roman Missal

The Roman Missal, Third Edition, the ritual text containing prayers and instructions for the celebration of the Mass, was implemented in the United States of America on the First Sunday of Advent, November 27, 2011.

Pope John Paul II announced a revised version of the Missale Romanum during the Jubilee Year 2000.  Among other things, the revised edition of the Missale Romanum contains prayers for the observances of recently canonized saints, additional prefaces for the Eucharistic Prayers, additional Votive Masses and Masses and Prayers for Various Needs and Occasions, and some updated and revised rubrics (instructions) for the celebration of the Mass.  The English translation of the Roman Missal also includes updated translations of existing prayers, including some of the well-known responses and acclamations of the people.

Father Steve's Homilies - Listen Here

How willing are we to hear the call of God? - 22 Jan 12

Willing to hear the call of God         Fr Steve Voyt

Today in the Gospel we hear about the call of some of the apostles, of how they had to make an immediate choice in recognizing the presence of God before them.  Too often in our own lives we don't see God standing right before us.  We get our vision clouded by a myriad of different things that we do and stuff that we're concerned with.  Every once in a while God asks us to clear out our own plans and recognize that He is the one in charge.  How willing are we to hear the call of God?  And more importantly, how willingly are we to answer with a "Yes."

Ten Commandments

vOrigin of the Ten Commandments:  Moses was sent by God to set the Israelites free from slavery.  Three months after leaving Egypt, Moses was called to the top of Mt Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments, which were etched in stone tablets.  The commandments are fundamental obligations of our religion and morality

Ask Father Steve Question

Father Steve,

Many of my non-Catholic friends say they don’t have to confess their sins to a priest.  They say they confess directly to God and ask for His forgiveness.  I say to them that Jesus gave us the sacrament of reconciliation when he said to his apostles, “Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained"  (John 20:19-23).

If a non-Catholic doesn’t confess his or her sins to a priest, wouldn’t that person die with mortal sin on their soul and therefore jeopardize their salvation?  Please explain.

Answer
You are right to explain to your friends that we as Catholics believe that Jesus gave the power to forgive sins to the Church.  This is most apparent to us when we consider the confession of Peter about Jesus at Caesarea Philippi (Matt 16:13-19).
